DU observes 'black day'

Teachers, students and staff of Dhaka University yesterday observed “black day” marking the “repression” on the university's teachers and students during the military-baked caretaker regime in 2007.

Wearing black badges, they held a rally at Aparajeyo Bangla, attended by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon.

The DU authorities postponed all classes form 11:00am to 1:00pm and organised a discussion in the TSC auditorium.

Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said those who carried out the repression should be punished.

On August 20, 2007, a clash ensued between some DU students and army personnel centring a football match on the campus. Protesting the incident, students took to the streets and demanded withdrawal of an army camp from the university.

The then government imposed a curfew on the divisional cities and arrested some university teachers and students.
