Common companion for many residential students of Dhaka University, the bedbugs are lately facing some disturbances: a dormitory is out to evict them from their abodes.

The signal the authorities of Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall sent the bedbugs yesterday, by launching a drive to “free the dormitory” of the bugs, carries an underlying meaning too.

If they succeed in getting rid of the bedbugs, authorities of other dormitories might also find encouragement to launch similar drives, which would mean stopping the long-run blood supply to these blood-suckers.

Dorm students are all familiar with these incessant pests and are aggravated with their continuance.

After years of failed personal efforts to earn peaceful sleep for the residential students, the authorities of Ziaur Rahman Hall aptly thought of putting a concerted effort and “declared war” against the crawlers.

The unique effort of Prof Zia Rahman, the new provost of the dormitory, under the title ‘Chharpoka Nidhan Karmashuchi 2015’ has drawn wide appreciation from the students.

The move came after some posts on Facebook on the sufferings of the victim students caught authorities’ attention, Rahman told The Daily Star.

“Our staff cleaned up all the garbage and old papers outside the rooms in the dormitory," he said.

Pesticide has been used to curb the growth of the bedbugs, he added.

There is hardly any room left among the 17 residential halls of the university that is not infested by bedbugs.

Students are often embarrassed when the bugs crawl out from their clothes in public. This iniative will avoid such events from happening and give the students mights of peaceful sleep.
