DSCC to free Gulistan from hawkers

Says mayor

Workers of Biponi Bitan Market in the capital's Gulistan ransacking footpath-based hawkers' makeshift shops situated there yesterday afternoon, right after Dhaka South City Corpotation's Mayor Sayeed Khokon visited the spot to inspect whether the footpaths were cleared for pedestrians. Members of Dhaka Trade Centre (South) Shop Owners Association claimed that a clash erupted when they asked the hawkers to leave the area, who refused and attacked them instead, forcing the traders to retaliate, whereas the hawkers claimed they had already cleared the streets after the authorities concerned told them to do so. The “clash” eventually ended up disrupting traffic through one of the busiest areas of the city for more than two hours, causing untold sufferings to hundreds of people heading home. Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday said they will keep the roads of Gulistan area free from hawkers at any cost to reduce traffic congestion.

During a visit in Gulistan with Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, the mayor said as the roads of Gulistan are hawker free people can now move freely and do their shopping.

Police commissioner Asaduzzaman said police will keep their close observation to maintain smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement.

DSCC few days ago freed different roads near Gulistan intersection from hawkers. However, the footpaths in the areas are still occupied by hawkers.
