Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) today conducted an eviction drive at Shishu Mela at Shyamoli of Dhaka and sealed it due to non-payment of the lease money and not renewing the contract with the city corporation.

The Shishu Mela authorities have been asked to resolve all the issues with the next seven days, estate officer and executive magistrate of DNCC Mohiuddin Kabir Mahin told The Daily Star.

The place will open to public soon since it’s a public property, said DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq who was present at the scene during the drive.

“This five bighas land worth several crores was given lease for three years to the Shishu Mela owners in the year 2012 for Tk 4,000 per month” the mayor said.

But the owners have not paid the money for the last 12 years nor have renewed the contract despite several notices, the mayor said.

However, Shishu Mela owner GM Mustafizur Rahman said, “We did not receive any prior notice.”

He will take steps maintaining the law and order, Mustafizur Rahman said in the response to a query from journalists.

A shop owner of Shishu Mela, Nahar, echoed the owner and refused to leave her shop displaying goods worth Tk 50,000.

The manager of Shishu Mela, Nurul Huda said there are 20 shops and 100 staff working currently for it.

“The eviction will endanger their living” added Nurul Huda.
