Dhaka, Thimphu can work for more dev

President tells Bhutanese king

Mentioning that there are many potential areas in Bangladesh and Bhutan, President Abdul Hamid and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck yesterday said the two countries can tap the opportunities for their further economic development.

They came up with the view at a meeting at the Throne Room of Tashichho Dzong, the office of the king.

During the 30-minute meeting, President Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh and Bhutan has many potential areas which they can use for strengthening their economic development and mutual benefit.

President's Press secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting.

The Bhutanese king emphasised the need for identifying the possible areas of cooperation and exchanging high-level visits between the two countries.

President Hamid lauded the recent advancement of Bhutan and said the bilateral relations of Bangladesh and Bhutan are getting strengthened through the exchange of high-level visits.

Expressing gratitude for the assistance and cooperation extended by Bhutan during the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the president said Bangladesh sees Bhutan with special honour as it was the first country to recognise Bangladesh after its independence.

Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck highly appreciated the development and progress of Bangladesh and hoped that Bangladesh would be able to maintain this development trend in the future.

Abdul Hamid invited the king and queen to visit Bangladesh. He conveyed good wishes to the newly born member of the royal family Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck.

President's wife Rashida Khanam and Queen Jetsun Pema were also present.
