Banani rape: Action against those sharing victims’ photos

Action will be taken against those who are spreading pictures of the Banani twin rape victims through social media, a top DMP official said today.

“Spreading pictures of rape victims in any medium is against the law of the country and we will inform the matter to the cyber security unit of police,” said Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

He said this while replying to queries at a press conference at DMP Media Centre on Mintoo Road around noon.

“Two of the accused already confessed to their crimes while interrogation of the three others is going on” the joint commissioner added.

Two university students came forth last month with allegations of rape against five including Ahmed Shafat, son of Dildar Ahmed Selim who is one of the owners of Apan Jewellers. They said they were raped at a birthday party at The Raintree hotel in Dhaka’s Banani on March 28.

On May 6, one of the victims filed a case against Shafat, his associates Nayem Ashraf alias Halim and Shadman Sakif, driver Billal Hossain and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.

All the five accused in the case have been arrested.
