Declare Feb 18 as Nat'l Teachers' Day
RU teachers, students urge govt marking Dr Shamsuzzoha's martyrdom
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday demanded that the government declare February 18 as “National Teachers' Day” to commemorate Prof Dr Shamsuzzoha, the first martyred intellectual.
On that day in 1969, Prof Zoha, the then RU proctor, was shot dead by the Pakistani army before the university main gate when he tried to convince them not to fire at students who were protesting the murder of Sergeant Zahurul Haque.
Secretary of RU Teachers' Association Prof Shah Azam Shantanu said it is our moral duty to declare the day as National Teacher's Day for his outstanding significance.
Over 200 students and teachers at a human chain under the banner of "Bangladesh Chhatra League, RU Unit" in front of the Central Library raised the demand.
