Decision underway on relocating rail tracks to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today told the parliament that a decision on relocating the rail tracks to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka was underway.

Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) in its next meeting will take “positive decision” on relocating different rail tracks inside Dhaka to outskirts of the capital in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the city, the minister said in reply to a call attention notice.

“I will invite the railway minister, officials of both South and North Dhaka City Corporations, Rajuk and other stakeholders in DTCA’s next meeting to talk on this issue,” Quader said.

Ruling Awami League MP AKM Rahmatullah from Dhaka-11 placed the notice under section 71 of the rules of procedure of parliament.

In the notice, the treasury bench lawmaker called upon the minister to build necessary parking places for different modes of vehicles and stop-over car terminals in Dhaka in a bid to reduce the horrific traffic congestion in the city.

AKM Rahmatullah said shortage of parking places and vehicles’ terminal is the biggest obstacle for the city’s mass transport system.
