A Dhaka court today observed that students, youths even elderly people cannot avoid being crushed under the wheels of bus due to apathy and carelessness of the drivers and helpers.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court today came up with the observation while delivering a landmark verdict that sentenced two bus drivers and a helper to life term imprisonment for killing two college students in their mad race last year.

On July 29 last year, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College -- Abdul Karim Rajib, 18, and Dia Khanam Mim, 17 -- were run over and killed while nine others were injured during a mad race between two buses of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan.

While pronouncing verdict in the case filed over the death of Rajib and Mim, the court also observed that such competition of the drivers to earn money should be stopped now.

Otherwise, such competition will be an ominous sign for the people, Judge KM Emrul Kayesh said.

The court in its landmark verdict in the country’s history also observed that the transport owners have chosen the path of earning money by appointing unskilled drivers.
