CU teachers threaten to go on strike Jan 3

Demand restoration of time scale, selection grade in eighth pay scale

Chittagong University Teachers Association has threatened to go for a strike on January 3 for an indefinite period if their demands for restoring time scale and selection grade in the eighth pay scale are not met.

They also demanded that the status of senior professors should be equivalent to that of senior secretaries.

The decision of strike came at the association's general meeting on Wednesday.

Cuta President Prof Abul Manchur said all classes, examinations and administrative activities would be within the purview of the shutdown.

Cuta general secretary Kazi SM Khasrul Alam Quddusi said the new payscale cut the existing benefits of university teachers by excluding the selection grade and time scale provisions.

“The teachers' positions have been brought two notches down in the new payscale, which is disgraceful.”

Cuta leaders said Finance Minister AMA Muhith had promised to uphold the selection grade and time scale but failed.

Earlier, on December 27, the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Associations had threatened to shut down all public universities at a press conference if to press home the demands.
