Diaz Murder

CU teacher Anwar suspended

The Chittagong University (CU) authorities have suspended its teacher Anwar Hossain Chowdhury as he is currently behind bars in a case filed in connection with BCL leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury murder.

The university authorities issued a letter signed by the university's Registrar (acting) KM Nur Ahmed in this regard yesterday.

Anwar, an assistant professor of sociology department and a former assistant proctor, surrendered before a Chittagong court on December 18, 2017, seeking bail. However, the court sent him to jail rejecting the bail petition.

According to the law of CU for its employees, Anwar will not be allowed to participate in any academic activity till the court proceedings end.

However, he will get the livelihood allowances during the period, said Nur Ahmed.

The suspension will remain in force until further order comes, and the decision will remain effective from the date of his surrender, he added.

When asked, why his suspension came after a long time of his surrender, Nur Ahmed said it was under process.

Earlier, teachers and students of the university criticised the authorities on the social media for not suspending Anwar even after his surrender.

“It was too late; it's good that the university authorities have finally taken the decision,” said a senior teacher of the university wishing not to be named. On November 20, 2016, the body of Diaz, the then central assistant secretary of the BCL, was found hanging from the ceiling at his room near the campus.

Diaz's mother filed the murder case on November 24 with a Chittagong court against around 20 people, including the then CU assistant proctor Anwar Hossain and the then president of BCL CU unit Mohammad Alamgir Tipu.
