Ctg Bar assoc forms body to probe vandalism in Ctg court

Chittagong District Bar Association formed a committee yesterday to probe the incident of vandalism carried out by the lawyers at a Chittagong court on January 18.

Led by President and General Secretary (GS) of the association, the committee will also identify the lawyers who were involved in the incident.

Bar President Advocate Kafil Uddin said senior lawyers and incumbent and former presidents and GSs of the association in a meeting on Tuesday condemned the incident. As per their suggestion, the committee was formed.

Contacted, the bar association's GS Zahed Biru said, “Appropriate legal action would be taken if the allegation of misconduct against anybody is found true”.

On January 18, agitating lawyers vandalised a Chittagong court after it rejected a bail petition of their fellow lawyer and his wife in a human trafficking case.

On January 17, the couple -- Jamal Hossain and his wife Yasmin Akhter -- was arrested from Shah Amanat International Airport for their alleged involvement with helping two people, including a Rohingya woman, to go to Saudi Arabia with fake Umrah visa.

Following the incident, Chief Justice SK Sinha formed a three-member committee led by Supreme Court registrar to probe the incident.

On January 23, the Supreme Court also sent a notice asking Bangladesh Bar Council to take legal action against the lawyers responsible for the vandalism.
