Dhaka police today banned use of sharp weapons including razors and blades during observation of the Ashura – the major religious commemoration of Shia muslims.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah came up with the announcement today – weeks ahead of the Ashura observed on 10th of Muharram.

The traditional Tajia procession brought out during Ashura is where Shia muslims cut themselves with knives and blades to mark the martyrdom of Hussein at Karbala.

“We have held talks with the community (Shia community) and they have agreed to comply,” the Dhaka police chief said.

“As the Durga Puja and Ashura will be held almost synchronically, we want to avoid any untoward incidents,” he said. “Keeping that in mind, we have held talks with leaders of both communities.”

The Dhaka Metropolitan police chief also assured foolproof security for the occasion of Durga Puja this year.

Plainclothes will be on patrol at all the Puja Mandaps and close circuit cameras will be installed through various key points. The streets will be illuminated adequately.
