Cop caught red-handed while 'mugging' in Dhaka

An assistant sub-inspector of police and one of his accomplices were caught red-handed while trying to "mug" a trader in Dhaka’s Khamarbari area on Tuesday night.

The arrestees were primarily identified as ASI Jasim Uddin, 30, of Khulna Reserve Force and his accomplices Mithu, 35.

One of the victims Himel Khan, a trader, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Police Station against the two, GG Biswash, officer-in-charge of the police station, told The Daily Star tonight.

Himel Khan told The Daily Star that four people including Jasim and Mithu on two motorcycles signalled their rented private car at Khamarbari on their way to Airport around 11:00pm on Tuesday.

As soon as the driver stopped the car, they approached to the vehicle and snatched the car’s key identifying them as lawmen. They also snatched away two mobile phones from Himel and his cousin Shafiq Khan, who was supposed to fly for Malaysia.

As the victims shouted for help, several passersby rushed to the spot and caught Jasim and Mithu red-handed while two others sped away with a motorcycle, Himel said.

Later, they were handed over to police. The law enforcers seized a motorcycle from the spot.
