Comprehensive approach to fight terrorism a must

South Carolina State University professor tells DU conference

Terrorism has emerged as a monster due to the dirty politics of global super powers, and Bangladesh is a victim of it, Rab Director General (DG) Benazir Ahmed said yesterday.

He said, “The entire situation of terrorism has a historical chronology. We are now the victim of western world’s policy and strategy.”

Benazir made the comments at the closing ceremony of two-day international conference on "Terrorism in the Wave of Islamic state" organised by criminology department of Dhaka University (DU) at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the campus.

Stressing on the social resistance against terrorism and militancy, he said violence will not be eliminated until inequality, injustice and irregularity go away from the society.

Militancy will not be able to take root in the country as people here don't support it, he observed, adding, “Maybe we have to fight against it for a long period of time.”

He urged the mass media to be responsible in covering militancy.

Pointing out the weakness of law enforcement agencies in addressing various types of crimes in the country, Prof Shafiqur Rahman of South Carolina State University, USA, said, “They (law enforcers) think that they know but they do not know.”

He stressed on the comprehensive approach of criminal justice department, criminology experts and the media to fight against terrorism.

Prof DR Ziaur Rahman, chairperson of criminology department, urged the government to include chapters on criminology in the school and college textbooks.
