The condition of the four-year old boy, who was found abandoned in “critical condition” at Gabtoli Bus Terminal, has improved at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

He has been undergoing treatment at Paediatric Ward of the hospital since December 6, a day after Darussalam police rescued him in critical state. No one knows who left the boy there or about his abode.

The boy was also suffering from acute fever, according to the hospital sources.

“The child came here unwanted and unconscious. DMCH took over the responsibility of the child’s treatment. Some other organisations and personalities wanted to help but that was not needed as the fund allotted to him from DMCH is enough for now,” DMCH Director Brig Gen AKM Nasiruddin told The Daily Star.

The boy's condition was critical and it was necessary to get him admitted to Paediatric ICU, but unfortunately there was no such facility available for children of his age at the hospital. Despite all these shortcomings, doctors’ rigorous care and vigil brought the child back to health.

A child rights organisation, Local Education and Economic Development Organisation (LEEDO), also extended their helping hand in taking care of the abandoned child.

Five members from the organisation took turns as attendants of the patient at the ward, Kaniz Ayesha, a caretaker from the NGO told The Daily Star.

After the child’s condition recovered from his unconscious state, the doctors also came to know that he is mentally and physically challenged.

The doctors will discharge the boy soon and he will be handed over to the Department of Social Services through police, the director said.

A general diary (GD) has been filed over the abandonement of the child and police is investigating to find out who dumped the child there, Selimuzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Darussalam Police Station, told The Daily Star.
