Cabinet body worried at UP polls violence

The cabinet committee on law and order yesterday expressed concern over the violence that killed at least 33 people during the two phases of Union Parishad polls and asked law enforcing agencies to take stern action against such anarchy in the next phases.

Besides, Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir informed at a meeting of the committee that one-fifth of stolen reserve of BB was recovered and efforts are going on to regain more.

The meeting held at the home ministry with committee chief Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu in the chair was also attended by Law Minister Anisul Huq, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Civil Aviation Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, the home secretary, IGP, BGB chief, Rab DG and DMP commissioner.

After the meeting, Amu claimed that country's overall law and order situation is good at this moment apart from a very few exceptional incidents and it is improving.

Responding to a query, he said the meeting discussed the murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu and CID has been investigating the incident.

“A proper investigation and fair trial of the murder would be ensured,” Amu said.

Referring to the election violence, he said some violent activities were taken place during the UP polls and such situations would be brought under control in the next phases.

Replying to a query about killing of four people in a clash between law enforcers and locals in Chittagong's Banshkhali upazila, Amu said investigation is underway and everything will be unearthed.

He also added that CID has been asked to probe into the recent killing of some children across the country.

Amu informed that law enforcers recovered Yaba tablets and brought 200 drug peddlers under trial in the first three months of the current year and law enforcers rescued 206 males, 35 females and 24 children from human traffickers and filed 29 cases against the traffickers during the same period.
