Businessman jailed for 14yrs

A court in Chittagong yesterday sentenced a businessman to 14 years in jail in two corruption cases filed 17 years back.

The convict is Ratan Kanti, managing director (MD) of Azmir Salt Industry. 

The court delivered the verdict in the absence of the convict, said ACC Public Prosecutor Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury.

The then Bureau of Anti-Corruption, which became defunct, filed the cases with Cox's Bazar Sadar Police Station against four people for swindling Tk 1.43 crore from a branch of Sonali Bank in Cox's Bazar.

However, the court acquitted three others.

The court awarded Ratan to seven years in jail in each of the cases. It also fined him Tk 1,35,55000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail, and Tk 8 lakh in another case, the PP added.
