A group of people hurled brickbats, stones and sticks at the motorcade of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Banglamotor crossing in Dhaka this afternoon, leaving several vehicles including her SUV damaged slightly.

From there, Khaleda went to her party’s Nayapaltan central office and convened an emergency meeting.

The incident took place while the BNP chief was on her way to electioneering for her party-backed mayoral candidates in the Dhaka North and South city corporations.

Chanting “Joy Bangla” slogans, some 70-80 people swooped on the vehicles while the motorcade was waiting at the signal around 5:20pm, reports our correspondent covering the event.

Some of the people carrying sticks pulled down Lt (retd) Shamiul Islam, a member of Khaleda’s personal security force, from a vehicle and assaulted him indiscriminately. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Witnesses said the backside windshield of Khaleda’s vehicle was damaged in the incident.

The BNP chief, who remains unhurt, went straight to the Nayapaltan headquarters of the party from Banglamotor.

Two protesters were injured after being hit the vehicles that were trying speed away.

Earlier on April 20 in a similar incident around five vehicles of Khaleda’s motorcade were badly damaged while she was campaigning for Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral candidate Tabith Awal in Karwan Bazar.

At least 15 people including several members of her personnel security force were injured in that incident.
