The High Court today rejected the bail petition filed by suspended director of Anti-Corruption Commission Khandaker Enamul Basir in a case filed over the transaction of Tk 40 lakh as bribe.

The High Court bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq rejected the petition considering that the petition was not submitted properly.

ACC's lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily that High Court denied bail to Khandaker Enamul Basir and therefore he cannot release from jail.

Advocate Hasanuzzaman Ujjal appeared for Basir.

On September 1 Enamul Basir submitted a petition to the High Court, seeking bail in the case.

He submitted the petition through his lawyer, claiming he is innocent and has become a “victim of circumstances”.

On July 16, ACC Director Sheikh Md Fanafillah filed the case with the ACC’s Dhaka District Coordination Office-1 under the anti-money laundering act, on charges of taking Tk 40 lakh in bribe from suspended deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman.

Following a TV news report -- in which Mizan alleged that Basir took the bribe from him for clearing him of corruption charges, ACC formed a three-member investigation committee headed by Fanafillah, and suspended Basir.

In May last year, ACC launched an inquiry into the wealth of Mizan, tasking Basir with the job.

On July 1, the HC handed suspended DIG Mizan to police, after he appeared before it and sought bail in the corruption case.

Earlier on June 24, ACC filed the case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and nephew Mahmudul Hasan, a sub-inspector of police, on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
