BNP is planning to take up political programmes while continuing to legally fight “false” cases against its chairperson Khaleda Zia and others, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said yesterday.

“We are now again talking about it. We will try our best,” the party's spokesperson told journalists after a meeting with associate and front bodies at BNP's Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital.

His comment coincides with the final trial proceedings in the Zia charitable and orphanage graft cases.

BNP leaders yesterday discussed observing Khaleda's jail release day with a discussion involving senior leaders and pro-BNP intellectuals at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh tomorrow afternoon, says a press release.

Khaleda was arrested on September 3, 2007 and released on bail on September 11, 2008 over graft charges.

Fakhrul said Khaleda would be given a due reception on her scheduled return home from Saudi Arabia on September 22. She went there on September 7 and performed Hajj with family members arriving from London.

Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon and Organising Secretary Imran Saleh Prince were present.
