BNP asks clashing supporters to calm down

BNP has asked its activists and supporters to calm down and remain peaceful around its central office following clashes earlier in the day.

“Police attacked without warning. They opened gunfire,” Rizvi Ahmed, senior joint secretary general of the party, said on open mic after clashes.

“I condemn the police brutality. But, we will not create chaos. We will maintain a peaceful atmosphere here,” he called out to the gathered men.

WHAT HAPPENED EARLIER?

During the third day of nomination form sale, clashes broke out between police and supporters and activists of the opposition party.

Two police cars were set on fire as police tried to disperse the gathered men with tear gas canisters and batons. The situation quickly returned to normal.

Up until now, both police and BNP have been accusing each other of incitement, which led to the untoward incident after two days of peacefully festive atmosphere at Nayapaltan.
