Bills placed for Rangpur, Gazipur metropolitan police forces

The Rangpur Metropolitan Police Act, 2018, and the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Act, 2018, were placed in parliament yesterday for constituting separate police force with a view to maintaining the law and order in the two city corporation areas.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal placed the two separate bills in the House with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

The Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) is constituted within a total of 203.63 square kilometres of Rangpur and its adjacent areas.

Placing the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Act, 2018, the home minister said the government has enacted the proposed law for maintaining the people's security, improvement of the law and order and services of the police in the RCC area.

In November last year, the draft of the two bills was approved at the cabinet meeting. The bill was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on the home affairs for scrutiny and the committee will report back to the House within 15 days.

While placing the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Act, the home minister said the government has enacted the proposed law for maintaining people's security, law and order situation and improving services of the police in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) area.

The GCC is constituted within a total of 329.90 square kilometres of Gazipur and Tongi municipalities. The bill was sent to the parliamentary standing committee on the home affairs for scrutiny and the committee will report back to parliament within 15 days.
