Bernicat assures US help in fighting terror

US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat yesterday assured Bangladesh of helping fight terrorism.

She emphasised sharing information and evidence of militant attacks to resist further attack by the militants, who are currently operating worldwide.

“If we don't share [the information and evidence] with cross agencies and governments, then we cannot protect ourselves,” she told journalists after a discussion on gender-based violence organised by the American Center in the capital's EMK Center.

About the anti-militant operation in Sylhet, she said according to the government the militants were home-grown, but they were inspired by the actors outside Bangladesh.

She also urged people to resist their relatives or family members if anyone gets involved in militancy and to teach them true Islam.

Earlier, Bernicat joined the discussion and inaugurated an art exhibition of Ayesha Siddika, a woman from Jessore, who was trafficked to India and rescued few years ago.

Jinat Ara Haque, national coordinator of We Can Bangladesh; Ismat Jahan, head of National Trauma Counseling Centre; and Bithika Hasan and Kamrun Nahar, rights activists, also spoke.
