BCL wants a fresh start at CU

In recent past, Bangladesh Chhatra League of Chittagong University unit hit the newspaper headlines for a number of reasons -- infighting, factional brawl, extortion, and so forth.

Due to the misconduct, BCL central committee on May 4 suspended all the organisational activities of the unit following a factional clash.

The pro-Awami League student body apparently wants to get rid of the deadlock as they want a new committee of the unit by dissolving the existing one.

BCL leaders and activists raised the demand while meeting a two-member team of the central committee -- Mashiur Rahman Sharif, vice president, and Mohammad Hossain, deputy sports secretary -- at a hotel in the port city on Wednesday, said BCL insiders. The BCL central leaders paid a two-day visit to Chittagong from Tuesday to Wednesday to bring back organisational strength of the CU unit.

As part of the visit, the team also went to CU and talked to reporters at Chittagong University Central Student Union (CUCSU) the same day.

After the meeting, when the central leaders were about to leave the place, BCL leaders and activists waiting outside chanted slogans demanding that the existing committee be dissolved and a new committee be formed.

Mohammad Alamgir Tipu is the president and Fazle Rabbi Sujan is the general secretary of the existing committee.

Contacted, Mansur Ahmed, senior vice president (VP) of the existing committee, yesterday said, "The committee has no legality now as its tenure has already expired today (Thursday)."

"To overcome the recent crisis and bring back the organisational strength of the unit, leaders and activists want new leadership," he added.

Another VP Rezaul Haq Rubel also echoed the same. To him, "To bring back the mobility among the leaders and activists, new leadership is a must as the organisational activities of the unit have remained suspended for around three months."

Earlier, on Tuesday, the visiting BCL leaders held a meeting with Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.

Nasir, also general secretary of the city unit of Awami League, advised the central leaders to form a new committee of the CU unit.

The team wanted to meet Chittagong city unit AL President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury on Wednesday, but they could not as the latter was sick, said Fazle Rabbi Sujan, GS of CU BCL unit.

Contacted, BCL President Tipu and GS Sujan yesterday said new leadership streamlines an organisation, and they also want new leadership.

While talking with reporters at CUCSU, Mashiur then said during their visit, they had talked to different stakeholders and would submit their report to central executive body.

Contacted over the phone, BCL central committee President Saifur Rahman Shohag yesterday said they had yet to get the report.

The central body will take the next course of action based on the recommendations of the report, he added.
