Assault on Star Reporter

BCL reinstates another expelled RU leader

Bangladesh Chhatra League has reinstated another leader of Rajshahi University unit after BCL expelled him for assaulting The Daily Star RU correspondent.

Saiful Islam Bijoy, legal affairs secretary, was given back his position Sunday night, says a press release signed by central BCL president Saifur Rahman Sohag and general secretary SM Jakir Hossain, report our RU correspondent.

On November 16 last year, the expulsion order against Mahmudur Rahman Kanon, information and research affairs secretary of the unit, was withdrawn.

Central BCL office secretary Delwar Hossain Shahzada said the withdrawal came as the duo assured them of not violating the organisational discipline further.

On July 10 last year, the BCL expelled the duo amid protests of journalists for assaulting Arafat Rahaman, the newspaper's RU correspondent, on the campus.

At that time, Arafat was taking photos of BCL men vandalising a bus in front of the university main gate.

Regarding the assault, Arafat filed a case with Motihar Police Station, accusing Kanon, Bijoy and five to six other BCL men.

Rezaul Parvez, investigation officer of the case, said they could not submit a charge sheet yet as probe is still going on.

Meanwhile, the journalists working on the campus expressed their grave concern over withdrawal of the expulsion orders.
