Patient's Death

Barisal hospital interns abstain from work for 4hr after attack

Attendants attacked interns of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal yesterday following the death of a patient, prompting the interns to abstain from work for four hours.

With post-delivery surgical site infection, Rina Begum 20, wife of Faizul Molla of Pirojpur, was admitted to the hospital on October 6, sources said. She died around 7:00am yesterday.

Later, Rina's attendants allegedly attacked the interns, doctors and nurses, said Dr Mosaddek Hossain of the hospital. Dr Ashok Chandra, Dr Shihab, Dr Mahiyan and nurse Mamtaz Begum were injured in the attack, he said.

Abdus Sobhan, one of the patient's relatives, alleged that first the hospital staff assaulted them when they alleged that Rina died due to doctors' negligence. The physicians, however, denied the allegation.

After the attack, the interns went on the strike demanding safety and security of the doctors, nurses and staff, and punishment for the attackers.

The hospital staff handed over three of the alleged attackers to police.
