Tangail Court

Assistant caught taking bribe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday arrested a bench assistant (peshkar) of a Tangail executive magistrate court while taking bribe from a complainant near the court premises.

Later, ACC filed a case against the bench assistant Jakir Hossain with Tangail Sadar Police Station.

With this, the number of government employees caught red-handed reaches to 17 this year.

According to the case statement, on April 18, one Swapan Mia filed a case with the executive magistrate court of Tangail's “Ka” region to recover a cheque.

Swapan also sought his cousin's help in this regard. When his cousin contacted Jakir Hossain, he demanded Tk 50,000 to end the trial proceedings quickly. Swapan gave Jakir Tk 15,000. But, he continued to demand more.

Swapan then contacted the ACC. Yesterday, while Jakir was taking bribe from Swapan at a hotel near the court premises, the ACC officials caught him.

Meanwhile, ACC on early Wednesday arrested Shahabuddin Chowdhury, former executive vice president of National Bank Ltd, from capital's Eskaton Garden area in connection with a case filed over alleged misappropriation of the bank's Tk 2.59 crore.
