Custodial Death Law

ASK concerned over reform proposal

Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) yesterday expressed concern over the proposal to amend the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act 2018.

Bangladesh police proposed a provision for action against “false statements” in connection with custodial torture and death saying the current law is incompatible with existing judicial system.

The right body in a release said, amending the law will hinder the human rights of the people who are in custody.

There are cases of torture and custodial death and several media reported of it, the release said adding the act is important for the protection of those detained.

The 2013 legislation was passed to outlaw custodial torture and death and declared it a punishable criminal offence.
