ASI's journey home ends in tragedy

The body of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was recovered from a river in Baufal upazila of Patuakhali on Friday, the day before Eid.

ASI Masum Billah, 35, was stationed at Sutrapur Police Station in Dhaka.

Police and his family members said Masum boarded a launch, “MV Gazi Salauddin”, on June 13 to go to his village home in Baufal to celebrate Eid with parents. His wife and sons had already reached there from Dhaka two days earlier.

As the launch was crossing Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal, he slipped off the vessel and went missing, said Abdul Goni, uncle of the victim quoting a relative who was travelling with him.

Two days later, around 3:00pm on Friday, local fishermen spotted the body floating in the Tentulia river and informed police, he added.

Masum was buried at his family graveyard on Friday.
