Architectural guidebook on Dhaka launched

Celebrating the architecture and heritage of Dhaka, an architectural guidebook was launched in the capital's Brac Auditorium yesterday, said a press release.

The book titled, “DAC: Dhaka in 25 Buildings”, was co-authored by Prof Adnan Z Morshed, head of architecture department of Brac University; and Nesfun Nahar, a lecturer of the same department.

The book is intended for local and international tourists and architecture enthusiasts.

Published by Altrim Publishers, Barcelona, the book explores the evolution of architecture in Bangladesh from the Mughal era through looking at 25 selected buildings and its history and politics that surround them, the release said.

The featured buildings include Lalbagh Fort, Armenian Church of Holy Resurrection, Curzon Hall, Faculty of Fine Arts, Kamalapur Railway Station, the National Assembly building and the contemporary Bait Ur Rouf Mosque along with detailed maps, drawings and pictures.

At the event, the speakers discussed the history of architecture in Bangladesh, affordable housing for lower income groups, and other urban planning related issues.

Prof Syed Saad Andaleeb, vice chancellor of Brac University; ASM Feroz, chief whip of Jatiya Sangsad; Alvaro De Salas, ambassador of Spain; and Hossain Zillur Rahman, a noted academic and economist, were present among others on the occasion.
