Apan Jewellers owners get bail

The High Court yesterday granted bail to Apan Jewellers' owners Dildar Ahmed, Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed in three money laundering cases, paving way for the release of the latter two from jail.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim granted them bail after hearing their petitions.

However, Dildar cannot get released as the HC kept his bail petitions in two other cases in waiting for hearing.

On August 12, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate sued the three. Three separate cases were lodged with Dhanmondi, Ramna and Uttara police stations while two cases with Gulshan Police Station.

According to the case statements, the owners imported around 15 mounds of gold and diamonds by “dodging tax”.

Dildar Ahmed Selim, father of the double-rape case accused Shafat Ahamed, has been made an accused in three cases while Gulzar and Azad in three separate cases following the directives of National Board of Revenue.

They were sent to jail on October 28 upon surrender.

Advocate AM Aminuddin, Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury appeared for the accused petitioners, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
