Another Ashulia factory fire victim dies

Another worker, who sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a gas lighter factory in Ashulia on November 22, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) tonight, raising the death toll to five.

Nehra, 40, succumbed at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital’s burn unit around 8:30pm, sub-inspector of DMCH police outpost, told The Daily Star.

The body will be handed over to her family after an autopsy, he said.

At least 26 female workers were injured after the fire broke out at Colour Match BD Ltd in the Girabo area of Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

According to the locals, the fire engulfed the factory building after an explosion. Firefighters with nine fire engines from different fire stations doused the blazes after two hours of frantic effort.

Twenty-one of the injured women, aged between 14 and 40, were admitted to the DMCH Burn Unit and five to Enam Medical College Hospital (EMCH) in Savar.
