AL seeks one more month to submit audit report to EC

The ruling Awami League has sought one more month from the Election Commission for submitting audit report of its income and expenditure of last year.

As per Political Parties Registration Rule-2008, all registered parties have to submit annual audit reports, certified by a listed chartered accountant firm, within July 31 of the following year.

A three-member delegation led by Mrinal Kanti Das, AL's deputy office secretary, submitted a letter in this regard to EC Secretary Sirazul Islam yesterday.

"We have already started preparing the report and chartered accountant firm Zakaria and Company is working on it," ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar, AL assistant secretary, who was a member of the delegation, told The Daily Star.

So far this year only Bangladesh Muslim League submitted its audit report, and only AL has sought more time, said EC officials.

The EC last month sent reminders to all 40 political parties about the July 31 deadline.

The registration of a party will be cancelled if it fails to submit audit reports for three consecutive years, according to the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
