Airport staff, 2 others held over gold smuggling

An airport staff and two others were detained today in connection with gold smuggling at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka.

Two passengers, Md Ekramul Haque and Zahidul Haque, were smuggling gold with the help of Md Jamal Uddin Patwari, a janitor at the airport.

The trio were caught red handed and recovered 57 gold bars from them, weiging over 6.6kg, Othello Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, told The Daily Star.

Md Ekramul Haque and Zahidul Haque came in via an Emirates Airlines flight that landed at Dhaka airport this morning. They then contacted the airport staff.

They were caught at the airport mosque with the gold bars worth Tk 3.32 crore.

Last reported, steps were underway to book the trio under the legal system.
