9.5 Kg gold seized at Dhaka airport, 5 held

Customs and Customs Intelligence officials in separate drives today seized around 9.5 Kg gold and detained five people at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital this morning.

Being tipped-off, a team of Customs Intelligence officials detained four people, including three family members, and seized 20 gold bars and some ornaments weighing 4.98 Kg after searching their bodies, said Dr Moinul Khan, director general of Customs Intelligence.

The detainees are – Main Uddin, 42, his wife Abida Sultana, 33, their five-year-old son Muzzakir Moin and Lucky Akter, 23.

They all landed at the airport from Kuala Lumpur by a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, BG 087, around 7:00am, Moinul said, adding that the detainees were used as gold smuggling carrier.

Meanwhile, a team of airport Customs detained Poly Rani Das, another passenger of the same flight, following recovery of 4.5 Kg gold from her luggage at green channel of the airport, said Kazi Md Ziauddin, joint commissioner of Customs.

The market price of the total gold seized today is estimated to be around Tk 4.25 crore.
