Gang Rape in Bus

5 transport workers remanded

A Dhaka court yesterday placed five transport workers on a three-day remand each in a case filed over a gang-rape incident in a moving bus on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Dhamrai on Sunday night.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Atiqur Rahman gave the order after Inspector Zakaria Hossain of Dhamrai Police Station, also the case's investigation officer, produced them before the court seeking a seven-day remand for each.

The accused are bus driver Babu Mollik, 24, his two assistants Abdul Aziz, 25, and Bol Ram, 20, and two other transport workers Shohel Rana, 20, and Mokbul Hossen, 40.

On Sunday, the 24-year-old garment factory worker boarded the bus around 10:00pm to go home after work.

She told police that the suspects locked the door and closed the windows after all the other passengers got down from the bus. According to her complaint, four of the arrestees tied her hands first. The driver then gave the wheel to Shohel and raped her.

Abdul Aziz had also raped her before a team of police on patrol heard her screams and started chasing the bus.

Meantime, on Monday, she gave a statement before Judicial Magistrate Monika Khan.
