Some top terrorists, who are hiding in foreign countries, were the masterminds of the murder of Awami League leader Farhad Hossain in Badda area of Dhaka last month, a top detective said today.

Farhad Hossain, 52, general secretary of Awami League’s Badda unit, was killed in connection with feud over establishing supremacy in the area and share of extortion money, said Abdul Baten, joint commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The DB official said this at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Minto Road in the capital.

Farhad was gunned down by armed men as he came out of Baitus Salam Jam-e Mosque in North Badda after offering Jummah prayers on June 15.

Two criminals riding a motorcycle opened fire on Farhad and fled the scene.

A total of five suspects have been arrested in two separate drives in Gulshan and Mirpur areas last night by a team of DB (North), Abdul Baten said.

The arrestees are: Mohammad Jakir Hosen, Md Arif Miah, Md Abul Kalam Azad alias Onir, Md Badrul Huda alias Sourav and Md Billal Hosen alias Roni.

“The arrestees are professional killers and they had a plan to commit another homicide,” he also said, adding four pistols, four magazines and 12 bullets were seized from their possession.

Three fugitive top terrorists -- Ramjan, Mehedi alias Callins and Ashik -- gave instructions to kill Farhad from foreign countries, the DB official added.
