Detectives claimed to have detained four fake members of Detective Branch of police from Moghbazar Wireless area in Dhaka last evening.

They were detained around 5:40pm along with DB police uniforms, a walkie-talkie, toy pistol, handcuffs and baton, DB Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten said at a briefing at DMP media centre today.

Police said the detainees -- Shafiqul Islam Rana, 38, Mohammad Apple, 29, Ibrahim, 28, and Imran, 30 -- were members of a gang which extorted money from people using their fake identities.

Among them, Rana claimed that he was a suspended army personnel, the police official said.

They used to track clients at different banks withdrawing cash and then inform their accomplices waiting outside over mobile phone. The associates later picked the victims into a vehicle introducing themselves as DB men and then took away the money, the police official added.

If they found the victims short of cash, they detained them and demanded ransom from their families, threatening them of legal consequences, Abdul Baten said.

Using the fake identities, they cheated people in different districts of the country including Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Bogra, Sirajganj, he said.

On primary interrogation, they admitted to their involvement with extortion, he added.

A case was filed against them with Ramna Model Police Station.
