Dhaka University authorities handed over four students to police last night on charge of assaulting two journalists following a verbal altercation on the university campus last night.

The students are: Ahmed Foysal of persian language and culture department, Anwarul Kabir of communications disorder department and Tofayel Hossain and Ashraful Islam Sakib of English department

Ahmed Foysal is also Bangladesh Chhatra League assistant secretary of Bijoy Ekattor Hall unit.

The journalists – Masum Billah of BDnews and a female journalist of Channel 24 -- were standing in front of the Arts Faculty around 10:00pm yesterday when the assaulters approached them and wanted to know their identities, our Dhaka University correspondent reports quoting Masum Billah.

On replying that they are alumnus of the university, the students picked up a verbal altercation with the journalists, Masum said.

At one point, they physically assaulted the duo and tried to run away, but Masum managed to catch one of them, he claimed.

The proctorial body of the university handed them to the Shahbagh Police Station last night, said the university’s Proctor Professor AKM Golam Rabbani.

The students are still at the police station, however, no complaint has been filed against them yet, Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told The Daily Star.
