4 bodies recovered from Shitalakkhya

Divers of Fire Service and Civil Defence yesterday recovered bodies of four passengers among six who went missing after a trawler hit an anchored launch on the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj on Sunday.

The bodies were recovered from Kheya Ghat area around 9:00am.

The deceased were identified as Deen Islam, 35, Emon, 22, Falan, 35, and Johnny, 22, of Madanganj Shantinagar area, said Mamunur Rashid, assistant director of Narayanganj fire service. They used to work at a hosiery factory, he added.

He said an eight-member team started the search at 6:00am.

The bodies were handed over to their families, said OC Newaz Uddin of Narayanganj river police. “We are continuing our search.”

Arifur Rahman, station officer of Narayanganj fire service, said the trawler, carrying 80-100 passengers, was going to Madanganj Kheya Ghat from the city's Central Kheya Ghat.

“When the vessel took a turn, it hit the launch anchored at the central berthing point. Some passengers of the trawler fell into the river and swam ashore,” he added.
