30 RU students fall sick 'after eating food from canteen'

At least 30 female students of Khaleda Zia Hall of Rajshahi University fell sick allegedly after eating at the dining hall.

Hall sources said about 10 students fell sick after having dinner on Saturday night.

Five of them were admitted to the university's medical centre in the morning, said officials of the centre.

Dr Nadira Begum, deputy chief medical officer at the centre, said the students were suffering from various food-borne diseases.    

She added that one of the students missed her second year final exam due to illness.

Twenty more students fell sick in the morning after allegedly having breakfast at the hall.

Students of the hall complained that substandard food was being served in an unhygienic environment at the hall.

Contacted, Hall Provost Prof Dilruba Akhter Banu denied the allegation and said the students ate outside at different food stalls and became sick. 

"Quality food is being served at the hall," she added.
