MOURNING DAY EVENT

3 of a family arrested over 'financing attack plot'

Police yesterday claimed to have arrested three of a family on the charge of providing financial assistance for carrying out an attack on a National Mourning Day programme at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed the arrestees on a two-day remand each when police produced them before it with a 10-day remand prayer.

Abu Torab Khan, 56, his wife Sadia Hossain Lucy, 46, and their daughter Tajreen Khanam Shuvo, 29, were arrested in their Gulshan residence on Friday night, said the law enforcers.

The arrestees were members of militant outfit “Neo JMB”, they further claimed.

The arrestees confessed to sending money through bKash to those directly involved in the attack plan on August 15, said Mohammad Yousuf Ali, an additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, while talking to The Daily Star.

According to Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit, Torab's son Akram Hossain Khan Niloy, a top leader of the outfit, was the key planner.

ADC Yousuf said Niloy is on the run.

The plot was, however, foiled by CCTC unit in a Panthapath hotel where “Neo JMB” suicide bomber Saiful Islam holed up with huge amount of explosives.

Saiful killed himself during the drive by exploding two “powerful” bombs in the hotel, which is around half a kilometre off Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.
