3 to die for killing Keraniganj businessman

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced three persons to death and seven others to life term imprisonment for killing Bachchu Miah, a Keraniganj businessman in June 2006.

Judge Qamrun Nahar of the Second Additional District & Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka handed down the sentence.

The death row convicts are Maruf Hossain, 24, Md Titu, 21, and Md Liton, 20, while  Amzad Hossain, 21, Md Sabbir, 22, Abul Goni, 22, Wasim Kosai, 25, Md Samrat, 30, Md Nantu, 20, and Md Nawab, 33 got life term in jail.

Another accused Shahid was dropped from the charges as he is dead.

Of the accused, Titu, Liton, Samrat and Nawab were present in the court while the others are on the run.

The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender. 

A total of 11 persons were accused in the case.

Bacchu Miah, 65, was gunned down for not giving Tk 20 lakh in ransom in Zinjira of Keraniganj on June 18, 2006.

The deceased’s brother Matiur Rahman filed a case with Keraniganj Police Station, over the incident.
