28 Jamaat women denied bail

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected bail petitions of 28 female leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and sent them to jail in a case filed against them for planning to sabotage government establishments.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sattyabrato Shikder passed the order after Shariful Islam, inspector of Mohammadpur Police Station and investigation officer of the case, produced them before it on completion of their one-day remand.

Previously, they were also remanded for two days in the case filed under the Special Powers Act.

In the yesterday's forwarding report, the IO said the arrestees gave important information about their meeting to iron out plans for conducting subversive activities on different government establishments.

The arrestees need to be confined in jail until the investigation is completed, the IO added.

Defence lawyers submitted separate petitions seeking bail for their clients, adding that they were arrested on false and vague allegations.

On Friday, a team of Mohammadpur police arrested the 28 while they were holding a secret meeting in a building on Nurjahan Road.

The police also recovered leaflets, money receipts and monthly reports of Jamaat-e-Islami along with books authored by Ghulam Azam and Motiur Rahman Nizami.
