2 Jamaat men held in Dhaka

Two activists of Jamaat-e-Islami were detained when they tried to vandalise vehicles from a rally in Mouchak area of Dhaka this morning.

The detained Jamaat activists – Sumon, 25, and another youth aged around 22 – bore shotgun pellet wounds as police opened fire when they tried to vandalise vehicles, Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Around 20-25 Jamaat activists brought out the rally under the banner of Dhaka Metropolitan unit Jamaat around 11:30am over the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty for party leader Mir Quasem Ali in a war crimes case, the police official said.

Suman is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with injuries on his head and two hands, a source at the hospital said.
