2 factions of BCL quarrel at RU

Two gunshots were fired at Madar Bux Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) following a quarrel between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Thursday night, said resident students.

According to witnesses and hall sources, BCL RU unit activists were planning to occupy one of the three blocks of rooms in the dormitory and dedicate that to the hall unit activists. Therefore, BCL RU leaders called a discussion in the dormitory at 11:00pm.

At one point, Saddam Hossain, activist of BCL RU President Golam Kibria , allegedly beat up Abdus Salam, fourth year student of public administration and follower of central BCL committee member Sakibul Hasan Baki, for not having the phone numbers of the RU unit president and general secretary.

Protesting the beating, Baki along with his supporters locked the hall gate. Kibria with general secretary and 150 other activists reached the spot around 12:00am.

Later, the activists were freed as per direction of Awami League Rajshahi City unit president, said Baki. And in a while two gunshots were heard inside the dormitory around 1:00am, resident students said.

However, Saddam said Kibria said the former only rebuked Salam. But Baki said, “They have beaten up Salam as he works with me.”
