17 held in Ctg for ‘planning subversive activities’

Police detained 17 people in Double Mooring area of Chittagong city early today on charge of planning subversive activities.

Two of the detainees were identified as Advocate Md Ibrahim, 35, and Md Farjat, 23, our Chittagong correspondent reports quoting ABM Faijul Islam, senior assistant commissioner of Double Mooring Zone.

Acting on a tip off that a group of youths were taking preparation to carry out subversive activities at Jhornapur, Double Mooring police conducted a drive at a saloon where they were holding a clandestine meeting, police said.

Most of the detainees are 22 to 25 years’ old, the senior assistant commissioner said.

“Primary investigation found that five to six of the detainees are members of Jamaat-e-Islami, two to three of Hizb-ut Tahrir while the rest are from Ahle Hadith Andolon Bangladesh,” he said.

The detainees were shown arrested under Anti Terrorism Act and would be produced before the court later in the day, ABM Faijul Islam added.
