12 hurt as BCL rivals clash at Dhaka University hall

At least 12 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were injured during a factional clash in a hall of Dhaka University early today.

The factions -- one led by Salimullah hall unit BCL president Tahsin Ahmed Rasel and another by its general secretary Mehedi Hasan Taposh -- locked into an altercation over a seat of a fresher around midnight, DU correspondent reports.

At one stage, both groups engaged chase and courter-chase with iron rods, sticks, machetes and bricks bats, triggering the clash that left 12 activists of the both factions injured.

The injured were given primary treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and DU medical centre.

Contacted, Taposh said, “We just removed a bed from the pathway inside the hall as it disturbs us to move freely.”

Meanwhile, Rasel claimed that Taposh’s followers attacked them with iron rods and machetes without any provocation.

BCL’s DU unit President Abid Al Hasan said they will take organisational steps against the BCL men.

DU acting proctor Prof M Amzad Ali said punitive measures would be taken after investigation.
