10 lives lost on road

At least 10 people were killed and 24 others injured in road accidents across the country yesterday, report our correspondents.

In Naogaon, three persons including an eight-year-old boy were killed and four others injured in Sapahar and Badalgachhi upazilas. The deceased are mango traders Abdus Salam, 25, of Shibganj, and Hero Bepari, 30, of Bhola; and Labbaik, 8, of Mirzapur village.

In Sapahar, a truck hit an auto-rickshaw in Godown Para area killing the traders and injuring the auto-rickshaw driver, said police. In Badalgachhi, a truck hit a rickshaw-van  in Kellamuri killing Labbaik and injuring three others.

In Chittagong, two minors among three died after a bus, carrying around 40 people, fell into a ditch beside Chittagong-Rangamati highway in Raozan upazila, reports our staff correspondent. The identities of the deceased could not be known yet. The accident occurred around 4:00pm when the driver lost control of the vehicle, said police, quoting passengers. Police fear the death toll might go up.

In Sirajganj, at least two people were killed and 20 others injured as a Dhaka-bound bus, carrying 50 passengers, plunged into a roadside ditch in Bhuiagati of Raiganj upazila. The deceased are Jahir Uddin, 35, and Abu Bakar Siddique, 34. The driver lost control of the bus on Nagarbari-Bogra highway, said police. The injured are being treated at a hospital.

In Jhenidah, Abdul Mazid Khan, 65, of Madandanga village, was killed after a covered-van hit his bicycle on Jhenidah-Kushtia highway.

In Jessore, Hossain Ali, 48, of Salua village, died after a bus ran him over on Chaugachha-Jhikargachha road. Agitated locals blocked the road for several hours, said police.
